One of the most enjoyable and deeply satisfying aspects of my ICT career has been to explain to clients how technology can bring huge benefits to their organisations. I loved the hush around the room as they began to realise the impact of whatever "solution" we were discussing. Often transformational for organisations, but also for individual people who could capture the excitement of new opportunities that would deliver significant new ways to help them achieve their personal and corporate objectives. This was my happy place.
And during our last visit to Kibera, I was delighted to be in my happy place once again. In a completely different context, but with familiar challenges, and with some donated laptops, we were able to explore with our partners how available and accessible technology can help the Kibera Saints Organisation as it continues to grow and develop.
It may have been unusual for me to have people in the group who had never used a keyboard before (maybe that's a Generation Z thing?) or a laptop, but that in no way held them back. They "got it", and it was "transformational". This is still my happy place.
